Freelance scope of work in plain words

Scope creep usually isn’t a bad client. It’s a job where nobody wrote down what “done” means. Here’s a one-page scope summary you can fill in and send before you start, with a worked example. Free, no signup.

The one-page scope summary

Client / job: ____________________

In scope (what I will do):
1.
2.
3.

Out of scope (not included unless priced as a new request):
1.
2.
3.

Deliverables and counts: ____________________

Timeline:
- Start: ______
- Milestone 1: ______
- Final due: ______

Revision rounds included: ___ What counts as a round: ___

Waiting on you for: ____________________

New requests: I'll pause, send a price and date, and start once you confirm.

A worked example

Client / job: Rivera Bakery, homepage refresh

In scope:
1. Rewrite homepage copy (hero, about, 3 product blurbs)
2. Choose and crop 5 photos from the client's existing library
3. Update the page in their current website builder

Out of scope:
1. New photography
2. Other pages (menu, contact, blog)
3. Logo or brand changes

Deliverables: 1 updated live homepage + a copy doc
Timeline: start Mon 3rd, draft Fri 7th, final due Fri 14th
Revision rounds: 2 (one round = one combined list of changes)
Waiting on you for: website login, photo folder, approval contact
New requests: paused and priced separately

The example business is made up for illustration.

Five lines that prevent most arguments

  1. Out of scope, written down. The things you are not doing matter as much as the things you are.
  2. Counts, not adjectives. “5 photos” beats “some photos.”
  3. What counts as a revision round. One combined list of changes is one round; ten separate emails shouldn’t be ten rounds.
  4. What you’re waiting on. If the login or files arrive late, the date moves, and you both already agreed to that.
  5. How new requests are handled. Pause, price, confirm, then start.

Hi [NAME],

Here's a short summary of what we agreed, so we're on the same page before I start. Could you reply "looks good" or tell me what to change?

Once you confirm, I'll start on [START DATE].

Thanks,
